Delete your data
You can remove your Giving List account whenever you want. This page explains how, and what happens to your information.
1. Delete your account from Settings
If you can still sign in, you can delete the account yourself. You do not need to email us first.
- Sign in, then open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security (Settings → Privacy & security).
- In the Delete account section, choose Delete account.
- If a public Giving List is still live, end it first. The confirmation window will ask you to do that and link you to your registries. Come back and choose Delete account again once those lists are ended.
- Type delete my account and confirm. We sign you out when the deletion finishes.
That confirmation deletes your sign-in. We then retire the host record that holds your profile. If you do not host any registries, that record is deleted. If you still host registries you have already ended, we keep those lists online and replace your name, email, photo, and bio with an anonymous “Deleted account,” so guests can still open the list without your personal details. The same cleanup runs when our sign-in provider tells us your user was deleted, so personal details are not left behind.
2. What is deleted, and what may stay
When you delete your account, we remove:
- Your account and sign-in
- Your profile, including your name, email, photo, and bio
- The personal details tied to registries you host. Ended lists can stay up without your name. A live list has to be ended before the account can be deleted.
Some records are not ours to erase:
- Donation records held by Every.org and the charities. Gifts on The Giving List are processed by Every.org, not by us. We do not hold the payment. Receipts and the charity’s own records stay with them.
3. Signed in with Facebook or Google
If you signed in with Facebook or Google, you can also remove The Giving List from that account’s app settings. Doing so stops Facebook or Google from sharing new information about you with us.
- Facebook: open Settings & privacy → Settings → Apps and websites, then remove The Giving List.
- Google: open Google Account → Third-party apps & services, then remove The Giving List.
Removing the app there does not erase an account that is already stored here. Use Settings, or email us, to delete that.
4. Ask us to delete it
If you cannot sign in, or you would rather we handle it, email hello@thegivinglist.ca from the address on the account and ask us to delete your data. Tell us the name on the account if you have one. We will delete or anonymize the host record the same way, and reply when it is done.
